James Dobson accuses Obama of `distorting' Bible
Dobson and Obama: Who is 'Deliberately Distorting'? (by Jim Wallis)
I really liked what Jim Wallis said, but to be fair I did not listen to Dobson's show (I have only read the news clippings about it.)

dobsons accusation:
"What the senator is saying there, in essence, is that 'I can't seek to pass legislation, for example, that bans partial-birth abortion, because there are people in the culture who don't see that as a moral issue, and if I can't get everyone to agree with me, than it is undemocratic to try to pass legislation that I find offensive to the Scripture. Now, that is a fruitcake interpretation of the Constitution."
this is from the speech in question:
"So to say that men and women should not inject their "personal morality" into public policy debates is a practical absurdity. Our law is by definition a codification of morality, much of it grounded in the Judeo-Christian tradition." - barack obama
dobson should have read more closely.
Dobson should stay out of politics, as should I :)
I don't think people should stay out of politics. Edmund Burke said that evil wins that way. The Communists would prefer most people get out of politics, so they can take over. A legislator in England before the Revolutionary War predicted that America would not tolerate oppression (would be free) because they studied the Bible and the Law. When the two go together, we have true freedom. If those who are moral stay out of the government, the government will be corrupt. Didn't you watch Batman? You don't abandon a city because its gov. is corrupt, or destroy it; you stay with it to help it recover. You fight for it.
Ok - so two months is a really long time not to blog, Brian.

2 Months is too long - I will try to fix that ;) Maybe I should schedule a couple of hours each week to just dump my thoughts :)
As for politics, I think God has a higher calling. I think more good is done when we are embracing, feeding, building, reaching, longing, loving opposed to handshaking and signing things with our Mont Blancs. By no means am I suggesting we abandon the city - quite the opposite - we embrace it with the loving arms of Christ. We sacrifice who we are for those in need.
I'm not saying God would never call someone into politics - just call me skeptical :) I just think our call as Christians is bigger than Washington. Besides, if everyone felt called to politics, we would end up with a party in Washington and the sick and poor dieing at home while created legislation to save them.
But Dobson isn't running for office. That's not what I'm saying. Neither are you running for office. Being called to politics (or government) doesn't have to be about shaking hands and getting posters of your good side. It's a kind of community service. Granted, not as direct as handing out a sandwich to the poor man on the street, or paying his rent, or - what ARE we supposed to do for poor people? Things either seem too big or too small. Or too radical, like letting them live in your basement.
Ok. Done for now.

I do not have a good answer - I can say with certainty that Obama is not the answer, nor is McCain the answer. When I crack open the Bible, I see Jesus say ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life.’
I believe Jesus calls us to big things. Things we find hard to accomplish. Things we may find uncomfortable at times. The paradox is that what Jesus asks of us is simple and yet impossible because of our nature. And for me, politics distracts from the big things. Politics give me a reason to argue, instead of love, to vote instead of serve, to protest instead of sacrifice. I get distracted.
"vote instead of serve" is something I have thought about with regards to women's suffrage. Before we had the right to vote, we had to have real influence on the world, and were not let off the hook so easily as to cast a ballot.
There are a lot of things we substitute for loving and serving. Writing checks is one. And yet so many charities don't really have openings for one-time gifts of servanthood. Know of any?
